Chauntry Mill

Location: St Edmundsbury Borough
Client: D Gurteen & Son
Size/Use: Demolition and redevelopment of listed factory buildings and development of site for office, retail and residential uses

The Chauntry Mill factory site is made up of a series of Grade II listed buildings situated in the town centre of Haverhill. While some of the buildings retain a useful and viable purpose as offices the former 'north light' factory sheds, which occupy a substantial part of the site, are largely redundant and prevent the longer term sustainable redevelopment of the whole site.

CODE, working in partnership with the Borough Council, site owners and Historic England, prepared a development brief for the site which was endorsed by the Council and formed the basis of an application to demolish some of the listed buildings. Planning permission and listed building consent was subsequently granted following demonstration of an appropriate balance between harm to the listed buildings and provision of sufficient public benefit.

Capability Statement

"We have used the CODE team for several years now and their approach to our brief and the service from them has been second to none. We have a complex, Grade 2 listed site in the heart of Haverhill’s busy town centre. Code Development Planners have successfully negotiated with the local authority, Conservation officers and Historic England to guide us through a well thought out development programme. I rate them very highly."
