Location: St Edmundsbury Borough
Client: D Gurteen & Son
Size/Use: Demolition and redevelopment of listed factory buildings and development of site for office, retail and residential uses
The Chauntry Mill factory site is made up of a series of Grade II listed buildings situated in the town centre of Haverhill. While some of the buildings retain a useful and viable purpose as offices the former 'north light' factory sheds, which occupy a substantial part of the site, are largely redundant and prevent the longer term sustainable redevelopment of the whole site.
CODE, working in partnership with the Borough Council, site owners and English Heritage, have prepared a development brief for the site which has been endorsed by the Council and now forms the basis of an application to demolish some of the listed buildings. The grant of permission is dependent on being able to show an appropriate balance between harm to the listed buildings and sufficient public benefit for the town.
