Royal Norwich and Weston Park

Location: Broadland District Council
Client: Persimmon Homes
Size/Use: c1,000 new homes; new golf club house and creation of 27 hole golf course

During 2013 members of the Royal Norwich Golf Club voted in favour of proposals that would see the sale and redevelopment of the site at Hellesdon for c1,000 new homes, primary school and associated open space and other infrastructure. The proposals also included the development of a new club house and complementary facilities and the remodelling and expansion of the course at Weston Park, Lenwade to accommodate the relocation of Royal Norwich Golf Club.

CODE led the co-ordination and preparation of the planning applications for both sites. Throughout the process, CODE liaised closely with Broadland District Council in relation to the wording of the site allocation policy in the Development Plan to ensure a viable context against which the applications were determined.

The co-ordination and timing of the various components of the base studies and documentation to accompany the planning applications, timing of submission of the applications, the positive determination and commencement of the developments were critical to ensure that works on the new Weston Park golf course could be completed in sufficient time to enable the establishment of a playable golf course ahead of the closure and development for housing of Royal Norwich’s former course. The sale and occupation of new homes has funded the greatly improved and extended facilities at Weston Park, designed by European Golf Design and now a model for future golf facilities in the UK.
